SUMMARY:Who Owns Poverty? A Radical Shift from Aid to Action
CONTACT:Donna Zinser Clark\, 852-5612\, email:donna.clark@louisville.edu
DESCRIPTION:What if everything we thought we knew about poverty was wrong?
For decades, experts have tried to solve poverty from the top down, yet it
persists. Dr. Martín Burt, world-renowned social entrepreneur and microf
inance pioneer, argues that families and communities hold the power to lif
t themselves out of poverty.\n\nIn this talk, Dr. Burt introduces the Pov
erty Stoplight, a revolutionary methodology that fires the 'experts' and p
uts families in charge of their own destinies. Families examine their uniq
ue challenges across six key areas and create individualized road maps to
improving their overall well-being. Discover how shifting from aid to acti
on is helping millions around the world do the unthinkable: eliminate pove
rty for good. The Poverty Stoplight is currently being implemented by mor
 e than 583,000 families and 1000 organizations in 60 countries. \n\nDr. B
urt is the founder and CEO of Fundación Paraguaya (1985), a social enter
prise named Latin America’s most impactful and innovative development or
ganization by the Inter-American Development Bank. In public service, he h
as served as Chief of Staff to the President of Paraguay, was elected Mayo
r of the capital city of Paraguay, Asunción, and was appointed Vice Mini
ster of Commerce. Dr. Burt has written books on economics, development, mu
nicipal government, poetry and education. His latest books are “Who Owns
Poverty?” and “Poverty Stoplight: A Practical Step-by Step Guide to E
liminating Poverty in the World.” He holds a PhD from Tulane University
and is Distinguished Visiting Professor of Entrepreneurship and Social In
novation at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and a Visiting Professor at th
e Universidad Francisco Marroquín in Guatemala. Dr. Burt resides with his
family in his native Paraguay.\n\nThis event is part of the Center for Fr
ee Enterprise Menard Family Lecture Series and its Truist Speaker Series.
It is free and open to all UofL faculty, staff and students, as well as t
he community. It is Cardinal Flight approved for College of Business stude
