Open expression and free inquiry are vital components of a higher education: listening to diverse ideas, trying out new perspectives, contesting established views, are all vital to the mission of expanding and disseminating knowledge. What are the boundaries of speech within an academic community? What are the current legal and cultural challenges to sustaining a robust and open discussion, and what tools do academic communities have to sustain research and learning while abiding federal and state law? This talk will focus on ways to sustain open inquiry through challenging times. Questions about current challenges will be welcome.
