Set against the backdrop of political and economic collapse, Zafari follows a family struggling to preserve dignity and hope amid growing scarcity and uncertainty. Blending realism with allegorical elements, the film offers a powerful reflection on survival, social fragmentation, and the psychological impact of crisis. Director Mariana Rondón crafts an unsettling portrait of a society pushed to its limits.
The Department of Classical and Modern Languages and the Latin American and Latino Studies Program, College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Louisville, proudly announce the 33rd edition of the “Reel” Latin America(n) Film Festival, a celebration that has brought the voices of Spanish and Latin American cinema to our community for more than three decades.
The festival’s title, “Reel,” plays on both the material history of film reels and the presentation of real stories—authentic narratives that reveal the resilience, struggles, and aspirations of communities across Latin America and Spain. The 33rd edition brings five new features spanning Brazil, Spain, the United States, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela, continuing the festival’s commitment to exploring shared cultural questions across the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world.
